The social and behavioral sciences have often been the site of skirmishes by cantankerous observers. This particularly has been the case for those who would apply them to the solution of real and important problems. The proper methodology, the correct interpretation of data, the validity of inferences—these are persistently challenged, often by those with vested ideological or material interests. We have chosen a title used almost 70 years ago by Robert S. Lynd (1939), the pioneering sociologist who was coauthor (with his wife) of  Middletown  (1929) and  Middletown in Transition  (1937)—the quintessential studies that set the standards for describing American communities—to emphasize our enlistment in the long history of drawing on the social and behav- ioral sciences for practical guidance.
